Welcome back to my blog. Today I will be posting Top 10 highest dam in India. There are about hundreds of dams in India. Dams are built in large area. Their basic work is to protect people from floods. They are also used to generate electricity. Water stored in these dams can be used for irrigation, human needs and also for industrial purpose.


In the ancient times people used to build dam using rocks and clays but now they are made up of concrete cement. This article is about top 10 highest dam in India. So let's move to the post.


Top 10 highest Dam in India


⭕️ Tehri Dam, Uttarakhand


Tehri is the tallest or you can say highest dam in India. It is situated in New Tehri, Uttarakhand on the Bhagirathi River. The dam is 260m tall. It is used for field irrigation, municipal water supply and produces 1000 mega watt hydroelectricity.


⭕️ Bhakra Dam, Himachal Pradesh 


 Bhakra Dam is the concrete gravity dam which is situated on the river Sutlej, in bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh. It is 226m. High. It is the second tallest dam in India after Tehri Dam. The dam form to the Govind Sagar reservoir.


⭕️ Hirakhud Dam, Orrisa


 Hirakhud dam is the third largest dam in India and is situated on the river mahanadi River. It is situated about 15 km away from the district Sambalpur in Orrisa. It is 183m high.


⭕️ Idukki Dam, Kerala


Idukki Dam is built on the Periyar river. It is one of the highest Arch Dam in India and produces 780MW hydroelectricity. Idukki with two other Dams Cherutholi and Kulamavi makes the a large artificial Lake between the two rivers. It is 169m high.


⭕️ Koldam Dam, Himachal Pradesh


The Koldam Dam hydroelectricity Project is situated on Sutlej river in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh and produces 800MW of hydroelectricity. Koldam Dam is a Embarkment dam and it is one of the highest dam in India. It is 167m high.


⭕️ Sardar Sarovar Dam, Gujrat


Sardar Sarovar Gravity Dam on the Narmada river in Gujrat is one of the largest dams in the world. It is the largest structure built on Narmada river valley. It has height of 163m and 30 gates for irrigation and hydroelectricity.


⭕️ Ranjit Sagar Dam, Punjab & Jammu & Kashmir


The Ranjit Sagar Dam on Ravi river situated near Pathankot city in Punjab & Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir. It is uses for irrigation and hydroelectricity power generation. It is one of the highest earth fill Dams in India. It is 160m high.


⭕️ Srisailam Dam, Andhra Pradesh


Srisailam Dam across Krishna river in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. It is highest dam in Andhra Pradesh. It is built in deep gorge of Nallamala hills. It is 145m high.


⭕️ Chamera Dam, Himachal Pradesh


Chamera Dam near Dalhousie Town is another highest dam in India across the Ravi river of Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. It has vast reservoir used for water sports and activities like rowing, boating, canoeing and angling. It is 140m high.


⭕️ Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, Andhra Pradesh


The Nagarjuna Sagar Dam across the Krishna river was one of the oldest multi-purpose irrigation & hydro power projects in India. It has the second biggest water reservoir in India. It is 124m high.


⭕️ Koyna Dam, Maharashtra


Koyna Dam situated on koyna river is the highest Dam in Maharashtra by height with capacity of 1920MW. It is one of the biggest underground hydropower plant in India. It is 103m high.
